Privacy policy
Mistpane exists to keep things off your screen. It would be strange if it sent them anywhere else, and it doesn’t.
What stays on your device
Everything Mistpane needs to do its job is stored in your browser’s extension storage and never leaves it:
- Your blurs. For each one: the page address it belongs to (without the query string), the style you chose, a masked label like
Text · $•••,•••, and how to find it again. For an element that’s its tag, id, test attribute and CSS path, plus short fingerprints of its text and accessibility label. For auto-detected text it’s the kind of data (say, “email”) and a short fingerprint of the value. Fingerprints are salted with a random key unique to your install and kept deliberately short, so the original text can’t be worked back out of them. The text itself is never stored. - Your settings. Default style and strength, which detectors are on, and sites you want hidden at first.
- Your plan. If you start a Pro trial or subscribe: your license key, whether Pro is active, when the trial or billing period ends, and the email on your subscription.
Uninstalling Mistpane deletes all of it from your browser.
Page content
Mistpane reads the page you’re on only to do what you ask: draw the highlight when you hover, apply a blur when you click, and, when you press Scan this page, look for patterns like email addresses in visible text. That happens inside your browser. Mistpane has no analytics and no tracking. Its only server handles Pro billing (below), and page content is never sent to it or anywhere else.
Payments and Pro
Pro is a subscription. You pay on a checkout page hosted by Stripe, and your card details go to Stripe, never to us or to the extension. Stripe holds the record of your subscription: your email, payment method, and invoices. Checkout asks for a card up front for the 7-day free trial, and you aren’t charged if you cancel before it ends.
A small billing server, which we run on Cloudflare, keeps one record per customer so the extension can check your plan. It holds your Stripe customer ID, the email on your subscription, and the subscription’s status and renewal or trial-end dates. Stripe tells it when any of these change. The extension then checks your license now and then by sending only your license key, never the pages you visit. Like any web server, Cloudflare briefly logs the IP address of each request.
If you ask to restore a purchase, we send a one-time link to your email through Resend. The link expires after 15 minutes.
We don’t sell this information or use it for anything other than running your subscription. You can cancel any time from Manage subscription in Mistpane’s settings. To have your billing record deleted, email support@mistpane.com. Stripe keeps payment records for as long as tax and accounting law requires.
Permissions, and why
- Read and change data on websites you visit. Needed to blur elements on any page you choose.
- Storage. To keep your blurs, settings and, for Pro, your license key.
- Tabs and side panel. So the popup and side panel know which page you’re looking at.
- Scripting. Only for sites you mark “always hidden at first”: it lets Mistpane blur those pages before they first appear, instead of a moment after.
